Growing flowers from seed is one of the most satisfying things you can do as a gardener. And not as daunting of a task as it may seem on the surface. In fact, anyone can do it, especially with the advice in our flower seeds guide below.
Growing Flowers from Seed
Consult the packet of seeds you are planting for information on when to sow your specific variety. It is best to Sow indoors for surest results. Water well and place in a cold frame, greenhouse or on a cool windowsill. Windowsill propagator kits would be ideal. A temperature of 15°C (60°F) is ideal. Seedlings will usually appear in 12-21 days. Make sure to keep the compost moist. Pinch out the growing tip when 2 pairs of leaves have formed to encourage bushy growth. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil. If the plants are still a bit weak then you can support them with tall canes or netting.
Aftercare Advice for Flower Seeds
Use tap water rather than water from a rain butt to avoid the potential of introducing disease to the young plants.
Autumn sowings should be overwintered in cool but frost-free conditions.
