General Advice on Begonia Plugs
We make it easy for you to have beautiful-looking begonia plants with little or no effort at all. and like slightly acidic soil. If you do not have this soil type then you can plant them in a pot with acidic compost.
Most begonias are grown from tubers, however, for those who want an easier experience then growing from plugs is a great idea. And you won’t have to compromise as Begonia plugs will give you the same results as tubers, just with less effort. All you’ll have to do is pop these in the ground and water to get the most stunning flowers.
Begonia plants have bright-coloured flowers, so they make a grand statement in the garden without the need of anything else. Mostly blooming in shades of red, orange and yellow means they create a vibrant and energising display that will not go unnoticed. Plus, they always complement one another, so you can plant them without any fuss.
As they like moderate sunshine and temperatures, and only require frequent watering in terms of maintenance – begonias are easy to look after. They’re great for beginner gardeners who want to enjoy colour and beauty outdoors all summer but without the hassle.
Planting Begonia Plugs
Unpack plugs immediately, and stand them in water for an hour.
If you can’t do this, they can sit in Mini Greenhouses for a week if upright and not too wet.
Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post but they’ll quickly recover.
Put them somewhere warm, light and airy such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
When potting on, handle plugs carefully. Pot on using our 9cm pots in Shuttle Trays, using good multi-purpose compost.
Give your plants a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.
Plant approx. 20cm (8in) apart to allow them room to grow.
Aftercare advice for Begonias
Feed using a high-potash feed such as Blooming Fast Superior Soluble Fertiliser, to encourage flowering.
Dead-head when flowers fade to encourage more flowers.
Water regularly during the summer – begonias thrive in moist soil.
